What is it?
This metric aims at keeping the length of the paragraphs small.
A paragraph is defined as the content in between two carriage returns.
A rule of thumb is to aim for 75-word long paragraphs (usually 5 sentences).
If any paragraph has a number of words higher than 75 but lower than 100, the metric is flagged as Warning.
If any paragraph has a number of words higher than 100, the metric is flagged as Problem.
Why does it matter?
Structure the content
A paragraph gathers the content around a common idea or concept.
Make the content easier to read
Short paragraphs are easier to read and understand.
White space helps to draw the reader’s attention to your text.
How to improve the Paragraph Length?
Shorten your paragraphs
- Remove unnecessary words such as adverbs and adjectives when they only slightly modify the meaning
- Use the active form
Split your paragraphs
Develop only one idea within a given paragraph.
If several ideas or concepts are detailed in a paragraph, split it!
